FileBot App Reviews

Excellent!

I hope developer keeps up with the Windows version. I hate to be a version behind Windows. This version works great and is stable. The only problem is a typo. Instead of IMDB it says OMBD.

Great functionality, but it’s still wrapped in a Java grossness

Even though this app needs a new coat of paint, it still works great. It does a remarkable job at matching your ill-named files into something meaningful, and it does this very quickly. But even though this app is now on the Mac App Store, it’s still the same old Java app that’s been available forever. I used that old app for a long time, and I’m happy to finally pay for it, but I’d like to see the interface improved in the future. Hopefully, the developer will see that building a first-class Mac app is worth the time and effort that it’ll take to develop a proper Mac interface. I’d love to finally be done with all of the Java wonkiness. Here are a few suggestions: * The icons are not optimized for Retina screens. * command-, should bring up the preferences. * There should be a proper help menu. * The onboarding is very poor. I know how to use this app, because I’ve figured this out from the website. But a new user could be confused about how everything works. If this is going to be something that’s purchased on the App Store, it should hold the user’s hand and show them how to rename files. * I’d like to see built-in features for automation. Ideally, I’d like to see scripting support, so I could use this app with something like Hazel. * When changing the naming format, a default folder chooser should be used. It’s not very user friendly to require manually-entered folder paths. * Instead of requiring the user to use format strings, there should be drag-and-drop tokens that can be used to build the format more easily. Look at how Hazel does this for inspiration. * There should be an explanation about sandboxing and permissions before the user is asked to grant permission. This could be potentially confusing for the user. * Working with text doesn’t work the Mac way. If I press option-right when editing the format, I should go to the next word. When I press command-right, I should be taken to the end of the line. Right now, it’s obvious that this is written in Java, and it’s not using the Cocoa frameworks.

Glad to see Filebot in the App Store

I’ve been using this application for years and it is AWESOME! Given the amount of time this will save you in organizing your media files $5 is the bargain of a lifetime. I’m glad to be able to pay the developer for the work he has put into the program and hope that others do too so that he can continue to improve it and add functionality. Trust me, if you need the functionality that this app provides you will not be sorry… BUY IT.

A true *must-have*

I’m happy to see this application in the App Store! I’ve been using FileBot for years, and it feels good to cough up a few bucks! It’s a pity there’s no non-App Store build available, though, because a lot of people on Macs aren’t going to discover this awesome tool. Epsidode and film naming, subtitles in multiple languages, and more. The *only* reason I give it four instead of five stars is because as a Java app available on every platform, the Mac version just isn’t very Mac-like. It does the job, and I bought this application anyway.

Older versions work, this one crashes.

I have older version of this app and was hoping this one through the App Store would work much better, but this version crashes when I launched.

A++ for renaming movies and TV shows

Been using for quite awhile. Good to pay the developer after all this time.

Worth 10x the cost

Had a very unclean and unorganized collection of movies and TV shows and decided to start using Plex. Saw their directory/file naming scheme and my heart sank because of the amount of work that would be required. Tried to do some by hand but the effort was derailing the whole project as it would have taken weeks to complete with some questionable consistency. Then I found FileBot. I was able to get everything organized in just a couple hours, complete with all movies having subtitles. The process was so simple, I could have had a child handle it. I don’t fawn over software often but there is so much to love about this one.

FileBot is the best!

Need subtitles? Need subtitles and renaming in different languages? This what I use it for. There are many other features - check it out!

This app has saved me thousands of Hours

Like many I recently switched to Plex for all my media serving. What I learned was that my file naming conventions weren’t ready for it would take tons of work to put everthing in order. It’s amazing how many similarly nanmed movies there are and this app looks it up for me and makes my life better. TV Shows were always a lot of work too since episode numbers were a tough way to try to remember where you left off. Well this app cleaned my file names and plex serves them-now I finally have the setup I always wanted. I will say that the interface takes a little getting used to and won’t win a beauty contest but the quality of the results will make you forgive and forget. Amazing app. Best $9 I’ve ever spent on software- IN MY LIFE! If you’re in doubt, buy it!

Uninuitive, not very polished, but good functionality

The interface is not very intuitive or consistent with the typical Mac App UI guidelines. It’s a little tricky, seem half-done, not very polished, clearly a wrapper over a sophisticated command line program. That said, if you invest a bit of time and work past it’s quirks, it seems to do a very nice job. It’d be 5 stars if they cleaned up the UI a bit more though, no doubt.

Command Line

Just wait till you see what this can do for you…. All I have to do is drop a video file in a folder, and this, through automator, will rename it, tag it, subtiles, and move it into a new folder, with correct folder structure, and then clean itself up and delete the original files. Phenominal.

Excellent functionality

Filebot is an amazing little app that works wonders with re-naming videos and tv shows and it can organize them into custom folder/filename structures. The one thing that could be improved is the user interface. I know how to do everything that I need to do, but some of the interactions are not intuitive, and I feel like the layout could be changed to make it a bit easier (and conform to OS X interface guidlines). It also has some great scripting functionality that you can look into online.

The ad has more design than the app.

It definitely does *not* “just work,” since it’s unable to handle accented characters, for example. This is especially strange for an app that is sold through opensubtitles.org, i.e. lots of accented and non-roman characters all over the place. It doesn’t present any real information on the meta data it’s going to download, so you have to guess about duration, framerate and the like. Interface is old Java and is terrible. This app needs lots of work — they really should hire the people who did the ad. If I had more time, I’d do this app over again myself. Maybe this summer.

A Must-Buy for Plex Users

I recently bought Plex as my home media server and was horrified to realize my media file naming scheme would not work with it. After renaming one entire TV series, I realized I would rather not use Plex than rename all of my media files properly. Before I abandoned Plex, though, I decided to look for a renaming tool that would batch rename for Plex. I looked at quite a few and decided to try Filebot. Filebot renamed a season’s worth of episodes in just a second, exactly the way I needed it for Plex Media Server. Needless to say, the design and execution of this software is excellent. I recommend it. And if you are using Plex or thinking about buying Plex, you absolutely must have this software. For the more-than-reasonable price, buying this is a no brainer. * As I continue to use this software, and receive all of the updates, I wish I could give it more stars. It gets better and better.

Severely Lacking

The Mac version of this program lacks the ability to watch folders, therefore having it automate anything is not possible. It’s all manual, therefore it really has no value unless you just need to mass rename a bunch of files at once. it’s not a tool for continuous video file maintenance.

Completely Worth the Price

This is a MAJOR time saver for anyone who is serious about collection TV shows. So far, it’s worked really well. The subtitle finder rarely finds the correct subs, but hopefully that will be fixed someday. I’d love to see integration with more subtitle repositories aka Subscene, though I don’t even know if that’s possible. If subtitle funtionality were improved, I’d definitely rate this as a 5 star app. Despite this, it’s still been well worth the purchase price.

Worth every penny and then some

I almost never write reviews but feel I need to make an exception. The $9.99 I paid is no where near enough gratitude for this program. I cant even start to fathom how much time and mind numbing tedium Filebot has saved me. I was using batch renaming scripts before but they where of only limited use, and only when file names had common components. Filebot fills a small niche but if you fall within that niche its a absolute life saver. I am using it to rename files for Plex and clean up the existing files I already did by hand even further for OCD and consistency purposes. I have not started to play with the CLI yet but I am sure it would be trivial to setup some automation scripts with it if your so inclined.

Works Great!

Works great, never had any problems with it.

Absolutely worth it!

This might be the only review I have written but FileBot more than deserves it. I cannot even express how happy I am to see my files organized and labeled in a way I have wanted for years but never had the time to do it manually!

Not worth $10.00

For a mass file renamer using web databases, it’s great. To do anything more you have to understand a scripting language that makes this program out of reach for the average user. $10.00 is almost a rip-off especially since it’s free on other platforms such as Windows and Debian. It mentions an OS X package but it is warped in Homebrew Cask and is even more confusing to use.
